Do you use resuable water bottles? I'm talking the Nalgene kind or equivalent. I used to have a Nalgene that I used constantly for years. Then I read all that stuff about BPA. I remember reading that while BPA isnt directly linked to problems (yet), any plastic with this chemical in it should not be used in dishwashers, or microwaves, as heating the plastic causes more BPA to be released.
So I tossed my old Nalgenes b/c I always put them in the dishwasher and replaced them with a new water bottle. Its not Nalgene, but its still plastic #7. However, I only wash them by hand with cold water now. Think this is ok or should I get new non-#7 water bottles??? |

| Not all number 7 bottles have BPA. But why did you get another one if you were concerned? I have a number of non-bpa plastic bottles, my kids use Sigg aluminum bottles and Nagene now makes a BPA free bottle so there are lots of better options. I understand that hot water hastens the leaching, but that it will eventually occur anyway. |

Ugh, I am so confused by this whole mess. Right now I'm using some Target brand bottles like the Nalgene ones, which I'm sure have BPA. And I freeze mine...2 whole ones everday. Apparently I'm going to be dead by 30.
This release from Hopkins says there's no harm in freezing or heating plastic. http://www.jhsph.edu/dioxins
So I guess if the dioxin doesn't get me, the BPA might?
I really like the idea of the Sigg or Kleen Kanteen metal bottles, but you're not supposed to freeze them either. And I need my water to be super ice cold! |

I was feeling pretty good about upgrading from Fiji to my re-usable bottle. Apparently I'm still ghetto. |

So somebody clarify this in small words so I can understand: is it only a problem if you wash (or freeze) your bottles?

From what I gather, BPA is a problem no matter what. Dioxins are what allegedly get released from excessive heat or cold. But not according to Hopkins...

Thats where I'm confused as well. I thought heating them is worse - that's why baby bottles are under so much controversy right now. I didn't even consider the freezing thing. I freeze mine all the time too! I'm gonna go bang my head against the wall for a few minutes. And then get a sip of my water.
I just don't trust anything the FDA says anymore. No matter how many studies they do, I feel like no one is going to admit any guilt and have to face lawsuits. No matter what the problem is. Same with the whole Autism and vaccine debate.....

| I understand that BPA leeches into your fluids whether frozen or warmed or not. Nalgene using a different plastic that does not contain BPA now. I don't know what else is in it, but the BPA is not there. |

Because of all of that, I bought a Kleen Kanteen which is stainless steel. There are no smells, no taste. However, I don't run with it because it isn't the lightest thing. |

| The Sigg aluminum bottles have an internal liner, and from what I have read Sigg will not disclose its ingredients and whether or not it contains BPA. I'm going to go throw away all my water bottles right after I take a smoke break and have a diet coke. Later. |

Ha! That's kinda how I feel too - I use Splenda a lot, only drink diet cokes, drink water from my tap, etc. Thats part of the reason why I havent immediately thrown out my new bottles yet. If the BPA isn't gonna get me, surely something else in my evironment will. |

EVERYTHING is so politicized these days, you can't even get a town council to act responsibly. So, no, I don't trust the FDA or any other Federal, State or local agency anymore, either.
I do believe those nice people on QVC are telling the truth...aren't they?
I told someone the other day that, if a pessimist is an experienced optimist, would a cynic be a pessimist with seniority?
On topic: I, too, find it hard to be picky about what's leeching from my water bottles when I'm living in the runoff from a heavily-fertilized farm field, swilling Diet Cokes and eating airplane food while being irradiated at 39,000'.
