Quote from Trent on 7/6/2008 at 12:03 PM:So Joe, google is still good because they give out free M&Ms (unhealthy) and bottled water (environmentally suspect) while withholding affordable childcare? That must be the 2 out of 3 perks they still offer. Got it.
Well I guess we just have a fundamental different view so it's not really something I think we'll convince each other of either way. It sounds like you feel Google is obligated to provide daycare before anything else. I think they are obligated to make the most number of employees happy with the money that they do spend. M&M's, bottled water, and ski trips make more people happy then daycare so that is what Google spends their money on. The fact is Google does more for their employees than pretty much any other company.

Again, you are focusing on the issue of subsidy. That is the least of the issues. The bigger problem is that they turned an affordable (even if unsubsidized) option into a pricy, elite and exclusive option that those who were willing to pay still could not. They made a command decision that everybody, no matter their resources, wanted the platinum service, when most were more than happy with the gold service. And they eliminated the gold.
We may disagree on the issue of subsidy, but I am not sure what that has do do with the question of limiting choices. |

My BIL works for a small company in Austin that was bought out by Google. He thought it was great that Google sent him and some other employees to Colorado for a weekend skiing trip. The only problem was it was so short that they barely strapped on their skis before they had to take them off to fly home again.
It's also the first job that BIL (45) has managed to keep for more than a year. I'm not sure what that says about him or Google. I'm glad it's finally working out for him, though.
I'm just relieved my kids are past child care age now. What a nightmare that was for us. I don't think people can understand what a tough issue it is until they go through it themselves.

"you feel"
"I think"
Nice.
Since you're the thinker, think me this: You've mentioned in your two last posts two different fundamental principles: "make more people happy" or (from a previous post) "survival of the fittest." Explain to me how these two fundamentals are compatible and you will win the award for the only unconfused political opiner on the inter-web. |

I think you are all retards.
I feel that you are all a lot like this guy. But less likely to get laid anytime soon.

Irony: I Googled to find that dumb picture.
Carry on, 'tards. Bonus points if you highjack this stupidity and turn it into a referendum on my evil use of the word "retard."

Happy employees = employees who don't leave for another company. A company that attracts talented people and keeps them there and productive survives.
Trent - I see your point but guess I see it more as a number thing. Overall they are still increasing from 200 to 500 available spots and they are all going to be filled. The average google employee probably can afford it. And a little googling revealed they have a financial aid program if you can't afford it however I didn't find any details on it. |

What comparable benefit are they making available for ee's with no children?
Oh, that's right -- nothing. So employees with children are paid more via the subsidy. |

We are past that. The subsidy, while interesting, is a red herring. A confounder. A fatmanbehindacomputer. And the subsidy is gone. At issue is the elimination of a childcare that is affordable. By a company that tries its damndest to be a do-gooder. |

I am not implying that you are doing it here, but many people struggle to diferentiate between the actions and goals of GOOG's founders and their private wealth, and the company's actions.
GOOG is a public company, governed by the rules/regs and fudiciary duties that brings. As a stockholder, I want to them to be a good corporate citizen and "do no harm" -- but I'm not comfortable with paying substationally more than market rates for an employee benefit unless it can be shown to attract and retain the best employees. |

The only thing I find alarming in this thread is the number of folks who think either the government or the corporation should pay for child care.
I'm a parent of two, and they are my responsibility. I don't ask anyone else to pay, and consequently, I don't want any "help" from government (or corporations) with their upbringing.
Google can provide the perks it chooses to provide based on market forces. Asking for any other kind of social responsibility is ludicrous on its face. Corporations are in business to make money. They provide jobs. Let each individual raise his own kids.
As for those who "can't afford" day care, most of the cases of this I've seen involve people driving new cars, living homes they shouldn't have purchased, or choosing to work just to pay the cost of day care. In many cases, quitting the job and staying home with the kids would offset the cost of daycare, but you'd be surprised how many parents are just too lazy to stay home.

So should public schools and public or employer-provided healthcare be eliminated because people who "can't afford it" have cell phones and cars? When you say, "most of the cases of this I've seen", are you out pounding the street, looking seriously at people's finances and performing in-depth interviews, or are you making snap judgements? Have you really looked at a true cross section of society, or just those you happen across? You think you know my situation well enough to judge me and call me lazy?
Personally, I find it "alarming" that somebody who runs to spend "Time with God" would have such an uncharitable view of the purpose of having a society and of people's needs. |
