Ha - my (very dominating) FORMER MIL did too. I was encouraged to buy and eat just like her around of the time of my "before" pic (30 lbs. heavier). That meant a TON of "low fat" foods. She also used to preach wacko diets like "the soup diet" etc. I had a gym membership in those days but my metabolism was messed up.
HFCS wasn't as big a problem then, but chemical cocktails including aspartame, etc. often replaced the sugar and fat in those "healthy" foods. Nowadays, any packaged foods I buy have a very simple ingredients list and I pretty much know what they all are. It makes a HUGE difference.
