"ignore" button? (Read 598 times)
posted: 8/5/2008 at 9:37 PM
There are a few times when I've wished for an "ignore" button to check. Something that would maybe blank out any posts from a specific user without censoring the whole thread. I know it's not very nice of me, but there are just a couple of people I'd be perfectly happy not accidentally running across their posts... Black eye

Seriously. All you had to do was ask nicely.

Hi Janell,
This doesn't sound very nice but certainly doable. The forum code needs a revamp soon so I'll consider it then.

Not to be a party poopist, but let me point out the one inevitable result of this feature, since I've seen it a zillion times: as soon as it exists, people will not only use it - they'll make a huge point of announcing that they're using it.

Whole threads will be filled with: "Good thing I've got this ignore feature, wink, wink!" People will scramble to get the last word in, then announce: "Ha! I'm ignoring you now!"

Then people will respond to people they're allegedly ignoring, because most people can't bear not to look. Then the ignored will announce they're doing the ignoring, a dozen other people will say "I'm ignoring poster X, too", an anti-X faction will arise ... followed shortly by a pro-X faction ... and then within days the missiles will leave the silos.

You think I'm kidding. Wait and see. The ignore button is the message board nuclear weapon, and once its unleashed its hard to put the genie back in the bottle. I think I mixed some metaphors there.

On the plus side, it would make ignoring this post much, much easier. Which would be a good thing.

Ah, yes. And I forget to mention the "post-post announcement of the ignoring" post. That's a goodie, too.

I'm putting you on ignore now.

I see what you're saying Jake... it just seemed a simpler solution than something like a rating system or constantly bombarding Eric with complaints of trolls...

Got any other suggestions?

Just ignoring them so they don't get the attention they crave?

Eric - You may know about this guy already. If you do, just ignore this.

http://codemonkey.ravelry.com/

This guy built a site for knitters. Yeah. Sounds silly, except that it's huge. And has the best forums, private messaging, personal home pages, etc. that I've ever run across. It's in "Beta" now, with 161,000 users. (https://www.ravelry.com/account/login).

Pretty cool stuff going on there from a coding perspective.

They've figured out how to make the site somewhat profitable (since it's free for users). Donations, t-shirts and goodies, and very selective advertising.

MTA: There is an ignore option built into the forums. Several people over there have requested "ignore user" buttons, but I'm not sure if that is an option yet.

I do realise it's not quite what you're after but having the ability to mark threads that I have an interest in would be really useful.

I already employ my own ignore button on occasion; mind you, that can change with the seasons, wind, or beer I'm drinking.
