"ignore" button? (Read 615 times)

Quote from Wingz on 8/7/2008 at 3:04 PM:
I see what you're saying Jake... it just seemed a simpler solution than something like a rating system or constantly bombarding Eric with complaints of trolls...

Got any other suggestions?

Sure. This one:

Just ignoring them so they don't get the attention they crave?

Just skip my posts and you'll be fine. And obviously Trent's. We'll go sulk in a corner together.

And I don't really care about any of the above. I just know what ignore buttons inevitably lead to. (Lots of free entertainment, mostly).

I mean, if people really had the maturity to quietly put people on ignore and go about their business ... wouldn't they already have the maturity to just skip posts?

For example, when I put Scout on ignore, I plan to announce it bi-hourly. Because maturity is over-rated.

No doubt. We can even have a weekly list that documents the most ignored users. Endless fun.

Is it wrong that I think that's kind of a cool idea?

Hey, what was Ilene saying? I can't read her posts any more.

If I make "most ignored of 2008" will that be hot? Clowning around

Eric - You may know about this guy already. If you do, just ignore this.

http://codemonkey.ravelry.com/

This guy built a site for knitters. Yeah. Sounds silly, except that it's huge. And has the best forums, private messaging, personal home pages, etc. that I've ever run across. It's in "Beta" now, with 161,000 users. (https://www.ravelry.com/account/login).

Pretty cool stuff going on there from a coding perspective.

They've figured out how to make the site somewhat profitable (since it's free for users). Donations, t-shirts and goodies, and very selective advertising.

MTA: There is an ignore option built into the forums. Several people over there have requested "ignore user" buttons, but I'm not sure if that is an option yet.

Thanks for this I've now realised I have wasted my entire life running / cycling when I could have been debating if "a separate category was needed for doilies"!

Not to be a party poopist, but let me point out the one inevitable result of this feature, since I've seen it a zillion times: as soon as it exists, people will not only use it - they'll make a huge point of announcing that they're using it.

Whole threads will be filled with: "Good thing I've got this ignore feature, wink, wink!" People will scramble to get the last word in, then announce: "Ha! I'm ignoring you now!"

Then people will respond to people they're allegedly ignoring, because most people can't bear not to look. Then the ignored will announce they're doing the ignoring, a dozen other people will say "I'm ignoring poster X, too", an anti-X faction will arise ... followed shortly by a pro-X faction ... and then within days the missiles will leave the silos.

You think I'm kidding. Wait and see. The ignore button is the message board nuclear weapon, and once its unleashed its hard to put the genie back in the bottle. I think I mixed some metaphors there.

On the plus side, it would make ignoring this post much, much easier. Which would be a good thing.

This kinda sounds like fun.

How's the ignore function coming?

I was wrong about it. Wingz is right.

Can't we all just get along??? I thought I could be mature and skip this whole thread, but it didn't work. I happen to agree with Jake on this one. However, I also agree with him that maturity is over-rated.

Bloody Nipple
My assumption is...

If one had a decent javascript background, an ignore feature would be fairly easy to do client side with Greasemonkey.
