Greetings, runners! Please tell us about your past training week and upcoming goals.

      Mon 26.5mi (3:37) Boston marathon
      Tue-Fri 0
      Sat 6.2mi (1:32)
      Sun 8.1mi (1:25)

      Total: 40.7 miles

my A goal for Boston was sub-3:30, my B goal was to finish. it was a warm day with 63 degrees at the start (3rd wave) and another 5 degrees warmer by the time we finished. I was getting 2 gatorades plus 2-3 waters every single mile. Still, I thought that maybe I could manage my target splits of 1:42/1:47 somehow. I was on pace until mile 20 or so, but ended up splitting 1:42/1:55. To my surprise I did better than many other runners I know, and overall I finished 6,000 places ahead of my bib number, passing many runners with much faster qualifying times. So while it was not a super hot day, like 2004 or 2012, it was still quite challenging for many people.

Alexander - Congratulations on your Boston performance!  Given the conditions, you came pretty close to your A goal.  A lot of people faded a lot harder than you did.  Well done, indeed.  As spring temps continue to get warmer, I wonder if (when?) the BAA will have to give up holding the race on Patriots Day and instead have it earlier in the year.

My week was notable mostly for the return to doing some speed work, especially the repeats.  I haven't been at the track in months and I've never run 200m repeats, so it was something new to me and, with the aid of my RP and perfect weather, it was quite enjoyable.  I used Jack Daniels' tables to set a goal of 54-55 seconds per 200, which is faster than my 5k pace.  It felt good when I did it, though the 2-mile run back home felt very long and my legs were rather sore the next day. Still, it was worth it.  35.4 miles for the week.  This upcoming weekend will be interesting.  Thanks to the rescheduling of a race previously cancelled due to flooding, I have a 15k on Saturday and a 5k on Sunday.

Alexander: well done on Boston. That's a pretty darn fine marathon time imo!
Fred: good luck with your back to back races!

Sorry I'm been MIA the last few weeks. Just haven't felt much up to posting I suppose.

          Last week:

          Tues: 5 miles

          Wed: 5 miles

          Thurs: 5.5 miles

Sat: 10.7 trail miles, 1700 ft gain.

          Sun: 4 miles

          total: 30.2

Now I just gotta put them all together, add about another 4K of elev gain, and I'm ready for my July 50K

Not sure what this week will bring. I have a 30K race next weekend (just a long training run for me though - not racing it per se), so may stretch out my long run to around 15-16 I'm thinking.

Fred, thank you! The start used to be at 12noon (and there were no waves either), but after the 2004 fiasco they moved it up a few hours. Even that was somewhat controversial and many people were against breaking the 100+ year old tradition. I doubt they will even consider moving the date. Also, I have to say that the weather in Boston is very unpredictable and highly variable. Like, two days before the race it was much colder and the day after it was cooler again.

Very cool that you doing 200m intervals, I am sure it's fun, but of course it is a higher risk activity, so I would probably only try it on a warmer day and after a lot of warmup running and stretching, etc. I see that you are also doing 1mile intervals, those are harder, but unlike 200m they probably can be included in a regular run.

Hi Tammy, thank you and great to hear from you! Solid week, with a long trail run and elevation I hope your 30k race/training run went well.
