Pearl St. Mile, 4:38, 16th. A return to racing in a distance that is not my forte, but it didn't matter, I was happy to be healthy and lining up to test where I am on this night. The field was packed, 45 guys, on a 3.75 loop course made up of 90-degree turns. I stayed to the outside at the start so I wouldn't get pinched on the tight turns but it didn't really matter as I got blasted that first 200m. I was firmly in the middle of the pack just looking to find a strong rhythm after a chaotic start. I eventually found that rhythm that I felt like I could sustain for a couple of minutes but by the second lap, my breathing felt like I was inhaling sawdust with each raspy gasp. My legs were definitely not ready for the speed but my aerobic system even more so. Not surprising though as I only just started to do some light fartleks two weeks ago. I tried to rally in the last lap but I was running through knee-deep peanut butter. Still very happy to get out and run hard again after such a tumultuous lay-off. As an added bonus half of the team was there to cheer me on, I really appreciated that.
