6x5' on- 3' float. Still dealing with the icy conditions left behind by the mid-spring winter storm. Moved the workout to the treadmill for safety. Richey wanted me to progress the effort, and per our previous conversation about fartleks, I was going to cut the rest if it came down to speed on the on's or overall average. Went to Runners Roost since Tricia still won't let me give my key back, and the treadmill there goes up too 14 mph. Set the first two at 12.1 mph and floated around 9.5-9.6 mph. I was uncomfortable from the get-go and during the third I realized I was going to need some extra recovery to get the pace to progress. Dropped the float to 8.6 mph and then bumped the 4th rep to 12.2 mph. I really struggled to get any sort of rhythm and getting through even a single minute was a mental grind. Kept the pacing structure the same on #5 but it was feeling like I was drifting to the back of the belt. I was pretty discouraged by my inability to dip under 4:50 pace thus far, even with the jogging recoveries, but I was still going to shoot for 12.3 mph on the last one. Took off and before the first minute was up I realized I was in trouble. I tried to push through the discomfort but by 2 min I was getting the wheezy breathing pattern that always causes a bit of panic; I imagine it's what asthmatics feel just before an attack. I had to slacken the pace to 12 mph after halfway, trying to regroup there for a minute before bringing it back up to 12.3 again. An absolutely miserable session on the treadmill this morning. One of those days where I felt inept and nothing came easily. A silver lining though is that I didn't give up, even when things wer elooking grim, I tried to do something with whatever effort I could muster. Pace breakdown in mph: 12.1/9.5, 12.1/9.6, 12.1/8.6, 12.2/8.6, 12.2/8.6, 12.2(avg)/9.0.
