2008 Shamrock Marathon - Virginia Beach, VA The last 6 miles were tough as expected and I slowed considerably, sometimes walking a little. I have a pretty high MHR but after seeing what happened to that girl, there was now a bit of fear lurking at the back of my mind. MIles 20 through to the finish were tough. As I started mile 26 I knew that a sub-4:00 was going to be very close. I saw the 4:00 pace group up ahead of me and had my eyes focused on the clock at the finish line. There was a girl running in just front of me trying to close-in on the 4 hour pace group also. As I looked up at the clock I had about 10-15 seconds left to cross the mat. I dug VERY hard, passed the girl by a couple of footsteps and came in just as it read 3:59:59. Of course that was Gun Time so my chip time should have been at least 3:59:00 or better. I had PR'd and achieved my initial goal of under 4 hours! Final Chip time: 3:56:36 16/69 for my AG 55-59 562/1413 Male An 11.5 minute PR for me.....11 minutes & 36 Seconds from a BQ...almost there.... I'm coming back here next year to finish what I started 2 1/2 years ago.....

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
"Some are the strong, silent type. You can't put your finger on exactly what it is they bring to the table until you run without them and then you realize that their steadiness fills a hole that leaks energy in their absence." - Kristin Armstrong

Perch's Profile "I don't know if running adds years to your life, but it definitely adds life to your years." - Jim Fixx "The secret is to make in your mind possible what was not possible before. The secret is to make easy what was difficult, instead to make difficult what really is easy." - Coach Renato Canova
"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."
