Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines. This was my first road mile and it felt really strange to be preparing for such a short race. I somehow started in the second row since I didn't feel like bullying people (Next year I won't be so nice). This led to not the best start as I basically had to run to the very edge of the street to pass the group of people that shouldn't have been starting ahead of me. The start felt fast, and with that little bit of extra work I had gotten into the lead pack but knew I needed to settle in. I think Kyle said I went through the 1/4 mile in 60-61. At this point 1 guy was already 5 meters off the front and I didn't really feel like chasing him until I had gotten my legs under me. As we approached the turn (1/2 mile-2:09) I started to feel really good and moved into second as the group was dwindling anyway. The leader probably had 20-30 meters at this point, but I thought maybe I could bring him back. We technically had a tailwind to start, although it seemed like I was still running into the wind for the first half of the race. When we turned around I could definitely feel the wind, but still was gaining slowly on the leader. I chased with pretty much everything I had from 500-600 meters away but never really got the gap closer than 10 meters. The last 100 meters I switched to making sure I had second secured. Pretty good time considering the wind. I wish I would have gone with the leader right away instead of letting him get away, but I guess that is racing. The splits I've listed were found out after the race. I had no idea what I was doing while racing. The race was a lot of fun. Hopefully the entire event has more people next year with better weather though. It wasn't quite as big of an event as I was expecting.
