Temp 25 (18) Wind 6 mph.
From looks of starting line, may not be much of a contest this morning. Half a dozen folks take off with me, and 19-year old bolts out to lead. Running pretty smoothly through second turn as he heads up first hill on Oak Street. Gets about two-thirds of the way up, shoulders drop, hands go down to side, and he's done as we turn onto West Lane just shy of 800 meters. Took me out a little fast, but no real damage done. May have needed it this morning. Struggled to get warmed up in 18° wind chill.
Mile One: 6:30 chasing the young 'un.
Mile Two: 6:37 pussing out on the hill on Independence.
Mile Three: 6:21 pissed at myself for pussing out.
Clock Time = 19:31. 1st OA. Per JW, kid comes rolling in 2nd OA in 23:XX asking how close he was to "that old man". Have won this one now the last two times running (2016 and 2018). Know how to stay on the right side of street to cut distance from 3.09 to 3.01. CBEGM tallies another.
Felt pretty strong, but could feel myself "stomping" at times. Was pushing the red line on straight/flat sections of course all the way through. Toying with in-race recovery. Didn't find any money, but won gift cards for two Chick-fil-a sandwiches and a $10.00 one for El Torero. I get it...fatten up the winner so he can't run as fast next year.
